Catania-Fontanarossa Airport is about 5 km away by road, a few minutes by car or taxi: a real plus if you have an early flight. To reach the centre, the Alibus shuttle runs a loop from the airport, getting to the Central Station in about a quarter of an hour before continuing to Via Etnea and Piazza Stesicoro, with departures from the early morning until half past midnight. Catania Centrale station is about 4 km from the hotel, and the nearest metro stop is Porto, 3.5 km away. By car, the historic centre is around ten minutes away, and the hotel's free private parking saves you hunting for a space. The sea is the first draw: the water is pleasant from June to September, and June and September are less crowded than July and August, when the heat gets intense. In the city, start at Piazza del Duomo, about 3.5 km away, with Sant'Agata Cathedral and the lava-stone Elephant Fountain; from there, head down to the fish market, the Pescheria, then walk up Via Etnea, with its shops and granita, to Villa Bellini. Castello Ursino, a 13th-century fortress that houses the Civic Museum, is worth a stop, as is the Roman Theatre. For a different kind of day, Etna excursions leave from Catania, some with hotel pick-up: May and late September to October are the best months, and it's worth bringing a jacket.
